Winter 2003 Forward to a Friend

The Winter 2003 issue of Drive includes an excerpt from Susan M. Seidman’s book, The Pet Surplus: What Every Dog and Cat Owner Can Do to Help Reduce It. This feature has probably generated more comments than any other article we have ever published. Most of the responses have been highly complimentary for drawing attention to a huge and complex problem ... that of pet overpopulation. Our intention was not to endorse a single solution, but to create a forum focusing on the problem. Ms. Seidman’s suggestion is but one of many possible approaches.

Apparently, portions of this article have been repeated out of context and have been interpreted that Subaru is “anti-purebred” or “anti-breeder.” This is certainly not the case and we apologize to those who may have been offended by the article. The author not only recognizes the special qualities of purebred animals, but also applauds the efforts of responsible breeders. Many who responded positively to the article are involved with purebreds, either from the breeding, ownership or rescue standpoint (and often all three), and appreciated the broad intent behind the article.

As several thoughtful responses pointed out, people make the difference. Education about a preferred pet, be it purebred or mixed breed before acquiring it, knowledge about how to train, socialize and live with the animal and particularly, the decision to spay or neuter, are all key to responsible commitment, and avoiding the tragedy of unwanted pets both now and in the future.

We recognize that not everyone will agree with Ms. Seidman. However, the problem will not go away simply by ignoring it. If the article contributes to further dialogue among those who are concerned with reducing pet overpopulation, we believe it has served a useful purpose.

We encourage you to read the entire feature and form your own opinion.
